"Innate-Dance"

Drumshelter Productions - Self discovery through movement

Self discovery through movement is a program that helps seekers on the pursuit to self discovery to understand how their bodies in motion, can bring them closer to understanding self through focused movement.

Through focused movement you can start to connect with your subconscious being and then start on the journey to self discovery. Our bodies are continuously moving never stopping, so does our minds. You may then not say you can not move. This brings us to the core of “self discovery through movement” – “Innatedance” (A made up word that describes everyone’s natural ability to move) innate capacity to move.

Innatedance pursues free movement with intent. Allowing the body to move in isolation, without connection to how the body would move naturally, as we know it today. The body strives to moves in an undefined construct with no limits, to come as close as in can to free movement.

Our minds are conditioned to work in a specific way from birth, Innatedance attempts to break away from the norm and create new ways of thinking and relating to our bodies. This is achieved through the manipulation of:
How we use our senses.
Images in our imagination.
Our bodies through heightened use of our muscles.
Our bodies through previous experiences (impulses), which are given new meaning.

These activities can result in being described as being spiritual in nature or an attempt to reach a state of trance / natural hallucination.

Innatedance Origins

This concept comes from a series of events and experiences that I had since from the age of nine. My life has been a quest to understand movement without knowing. My quest however not so ordered or formal in approach, I have researched movement from that early age and only started making sense at the age of 25,
I had my first formal training Contemporary Dance.

My growth and development since then has been phenomenal. I took part in numerous movement workshops and research in African Dance, Contemporary Dance, and Butho. Having listened to all the different professors of movement, that journey has brought me back to were I started – natural beyond natural way of movement “Innatedance”.

With a very traditional and spiritually liberal background (Grand parent’s priests; Grand father “Ngaka”; Mother Minister of the Eucharist and a “Sangoma”; My Father a true liberal when it comes to spirituality) I made more sense of my being when I engaged in movements of all sorts.

Through sharing of my life experiences through movement, I hope that you can attempt to find your innate rhythm, the rhythm of your soul. I am still searching for mine but know that through movement I am on the correct path.
